Trenton Oldfield and the Suffragettes – those similarities in full

Posted on April 4, 2012

In the aftermath of his wrecking of the University Boat Race on Saturday, maritime Marxist Trenton Oldfield has done an insightful interview with the Independent in which he modestly claims to be the modern-day ideological descendant of the Suffragettes – and in particular of Emily Davison, who died after throwing herself under the King’s horse.

It’s quite an ambitious claim – let’s check the similarities…

  Suffragettes

Insufferable and Wet

Cause

Votes for women. “Fighting elitism”.

Personal link

Denied the vote. Err, private school and the LSE.

Supporters

At least half the population. Laurie Penny. Himself.

Method

Hurling oneself under a dashing horse. Swimming towards two boats.

Target

The King. Rowers.

Personal Cost

Loss of life. Damp beard. Widespread disdain.

Outcome

Full voting rights for women. Mockery.

Oh.

The Suffragette slogan was “Deeds not Words” – if you judge Trenton Oldfield by the former or the latter, his was a belly-flop of a protest.

Excellent – although, just to be pedantic, Laurie Penny isn’t…

The usual wet socialist who is rebeling against his parents.

Most true socialists seem to have come from a privilged background and are socialists because they feel guilty about

it. But it doesn’t stop them from keeping the trappings of privilege. For instance Polly Toynbee having her many

houses and many incomes (not just from The Guardian) such as rent from the French houses and her inheritence.

Poor socialists are those who are envious about others but don’t have the capability to work themselves out of it

and better themselves. So they are like spoilt children saying “It’s not fair, it’s not fair” whilst stamping their

    feet.

The country allows the poor to better themselves if they have the capability. Just see where Alan Sugar started

from. But it doesn’t mean everyone should have the right to be equal. Society thrives on unequalness otherwise there is no point in anyone doing anything to go up a step on the ladder of success.
