The curse of the Miliband Mix-up, episode 329

Posted on February 2, 2012

This blog has long followed the Great Mili Mix-up, the tendency of even the most accomplished commentators to mix up David and Ed Miliband, almost as if the universe itself is trying to set right the error made when the wrong brother was elected Labour leader. So far it’s struck the BBC website, the Today Programme, the Telegraph, the Mirror and even Google Image Search.

The latest in this longstanding tradition is City AM, who illustrate the findings of today’s Voice of the City poll with the wrong Miliband:

The poll finding illustrated with David’s photo reads “69% Disapprove of Ed Miliband’s performance during the NHS reform debate”.

It’s hardly City AM’s fault that the Opposition Leader is apparently one of Britain’s most forgettable men – or were the picture desk just trying to imply a solution to the problem?

It is, in fact, very easy to remember which is which.

All you have to do is associate the well-known ’50s American television programme ‘Mister Ed’ (about a talking horse) with Ed Miliband.

Whenever someone refers to Ed Miliband, just think to yourself, ‘Which brother is the one with a long face?’

Ed Miliband – Mister Ed: it couldn’t be simpler!

Exactly Major, one looks like a horse the other just like Mr Bean. Only the dopey look is shared.

For those of us old enough to remember 1960s television the comedy duo Mike & Bernie Winters springs to mind when thinking of the Miliband brothers. Mike played the conventional straight man whilst the visually challenged (or should it be challenging?) Bernie did the gags. For a time they were very successful with their own show and guest appearances on many other variety shows. Sadly creative differences led to the brothers splitting up and Bernie pursuing his show business career partnering a large St Bernard named Schnorbitz whilst Mike left Britain to pursue a successful career as an agent in America. Sadly Bernie is no longer with us whilst Mike still lives in comfortable retirement in California. I wonder if history will repeat itself and who, or what, is the equivalent of Schnorbitz?
