Brown in the USA
Posted on December 12, 2010Gordon Brown is treading the traditional path for ex-Prime Ministers by going Stateside to lecture our American cousins about how he “saved the world”. On Monday he was hawking his book on Jon Stewart’s Daily Show. So how did he do?
Tony Blair remained very popular in America even when his approval ratings were languishing back home. Judging from the reaction on Twitter, though, the Yanks didn’t really warm to Gordon. Here are just a few choice snippets:
“The guy’s a complete idiot“…”unfunny“…”Oh God“…”slightly scary….shivers down your spine“…”Not exactly shocking that Labour got smacked around“…”demented“…”oh, crap“…”too weird-lookin‘”…”what a dick“…”reinforces why the Yank Patriots conducted the American Revolution“…
Really, the Americans got off lightly – most British viewers felt they were seeing a jollier, more relaxed Brown than ever before.
The old Brown still shone through, though – that “weird thing with his mouth” was picked up, and the smile was as worrying as ever. In classic, embarassing Gordon style he also committed his old sin of using the same lines at different gigs, opening on the Daily Show and the Late Late Show with a cringeworthy “what a great country!”
Americans evidently know how to spot a wrong’un when they see one. It’s hard to imagine Gordon Brown ever winning an election in the USA – much like in Britain, in fact…

As Nelson Muntz would say: “Ha, ha!”

Remember the “Bigotgate” exchange when Gordon Brown, in response to Gillian Duffy’s comment that she’d worked with children all her life, cranked up his catastrophically insincere rictus grin and purred “Ohhhh…children are soooooo important.” To paraphrase Blackadder, it was about as convincing as a giraffe in sunglasses trying to get into a “polar bears only” golf club.
Utterly ghastly individual.

Poor old Gordon… oh no, wait, poor old us, with a I.O.U. note where our economy should be.
16.12.2010 16:17
Nice site.
There must be something very, very, wrong with Gordon. I dread to think what he will do to himself and his loved ones when reality finally breaks through his self-image.

Helluvan assumption, there, old fruit.

And apparently, although the story has seemed to have vanished rather quickly, re capitisation of the banks was Mervyn king’s idea not goddo’s., he just stole it and made it his own.

It was socialising the debt not recapitalisation.

As a brit in the US, I can safely say: a. his daily show appearance was tragic for all involved, and b. no American would refer to themselves as a Yank or the War of Indepence as the American Revolution.
16.12.2010 16:59
No British person should refer to themselves as a ‘brit’.
17.12.2010 09:34
Believe the term “The American Revolution” (or more properly “The American Rebellion”) is designed to be charmingly offensive. “War of Independence” just sounds too grand really
18.12.2010 08:43
Why is the taxpayer funding his lifestyle? Shouldn’t he be “getting on with the job” as a backbencher?
16.12.2010 17:11
The original MadMan. He should be a hit.
Or perhaps, he should be hit?

“Tony Blair remained very popular in America”
and
“Americans evidently know how to spot a wrong’un”
Two completely contradictory statements – Blair was the vacuous grin behind which Brown was picking the country’s pockets. Only a few spotted this before Brown stepped into the limelight ….

Well spotted, and dead right.

The cost of his American tour is coming out of his own pocket, isn’t it? Surely he’s not still sucking at the public teat? Richly deserved obscurity beckons for this oxygen thief.
16.12.2010 19:18
Possibly, but he is paid to represent his constituents in Westminster. Does you employer let you go off moon-lighting on his time?
16.12.2010 20:57
Grumpy
What makes you think reality will ever break through? It never has with any other leftists
16.12.2010 19:52
But the key difference between Blair and Brown here is that Blair resigned from the commons – Brown is still being paid taxpayers money for a job HE ISN’T DOING. Don’t the people of Kirkcaldy deserve representation in parliament?
16.12.2010 21:28
“The people of Kirkcaldy” deserve everything they get for voting this F**king weirdo into Parliament for the past God knows how many years. Are tehy completely mad?
In the words of the great WC Fields, “Screw ‘em!”

Do you want to sniff my fingers?

I see one US commentator says: ‘Not exactly shocking Labour got knocked around”. Now that may well be true, but what is more shocking IMHO is that the Toris singularly failed to capitalise upon this and win a landslide majority. Hell! A working majority ould have been nice. No! Scratch that. Any sort of majority would be nice. Sadly we cannot attribute that monumental failure to G Brown, Esq.
17.12.2010 05:59
The problem is in Scotland. The Tories got a thumping majority in England and Wales, but the Scots voted for spending more of other people’s money. Partly is is because of Goldie’s complete irrelevance, but it is also down to the cultural malaise up there.

“Americans evidently know how to spot a wrong’un when they see one. It’s hard to imagine Gordon Brown ever winning an election in the USA – much like in Britain, in fact…”
I don’t think the American electorate are any better at spotting a “wrong ‘un” than the British, if last two imcumbents at the White House, messrs Bush jnr, and Obama are anything to go by.
17.12.2010 17:32
I would also add to the list the seven million not in work who no doubt would always vote Labour; the first generation immigrants who again should tend to vote Labour and an ever growing public sector all too aware that the Tories would be, well, unsupportive. In these circumstances and adding Scotland is surprising the Tories didn’t manage a majority? This must be a big worry going forward.
18.12.2010 11:55
“Going forward”???? That phrase is usually found in lefty b*ll*cks.
