Pity the Trafalgar Square Christmas Tree

Posted on December 12, 2010

Ever since the first student protest, when Millbank was wrecked, there’s been a pyromaniac theme to the anti-fees rallies. At every opportunity, heaps of placards, leaflets and any other flammable material have been set alight.

So with another rally being held in Westminster today, things are looking bad for the Christmas tree in Trafalgar Square. I wouldn’t bet on it still being intact, green and entirely free of ash by the end of the day.

Every year since 1947, the tree has been a gift to Britain from the people of Norway in thanks for our fight against the Nazis. Hopefully the students will have a bit of respect for that – but I wouldn’t put money on it. Couldn’t the relevant authorities have delayed the tree being put up?

If the worst does happen, you can guarantee it will only be a matter of time before someone starts claiming the police/Nick Clegg/MI6/the illuminati put the tree there as a deliberate provocation…

Students [ Pupils though :P ] of England! Wait until the said tree is on fire and then ask the man dressed as a [Tie Fighter] pilot to pay for 60% of your degree course.
